Family Matters Program (FMP)

This is an evidence-based, parent-focused intervention designed to promote positive parenting and effective parent-child communication about sexuality and sexual risk reduction, including risk for child sexual abuse and gender-based violence, for parents or caregivers of AGYW.

The FMP program is integrated as part of the Community DREAMS to target parents’/care givers of AGYW enrolled in DREAMS groups. Parents are selected and enrolled into groups for training for seven weeks. Their adolescent girls enrolled into DREAMS groups join the FMP group training during the fifth session which is a practical session to demonstrate communication between parents/Guardians and adolescents.

Trained parents graduate and become ambassadors of disseminating FMP messages to other parents in their communities. A major lesson learnt is that parents can gain confidence and comfort to discuss sexually related issues with their children from this training and that integrating FMP into DREAMS implementation does not only facilitate effective communication but can also reduce the number of AGYW drop outs which is a challenge in DREAMS implementation.  This is because AGYW group retention mentorship is promoted by trained parents having understood the benefits of DREAMS services.
